Wightlink gets ready to join this weekend’s Coastline Clean-Up

As part of this year’s Isle of Wight Day celebrations, a team from Wightlink will be joining the Island’s Coastline Clean-Up, picking up plastics and other waste along Ryde beach on Saturday 21 September.

Coinciding with the Marine Conservation Society’s Great British Beach Clean, they will start at Wightlink’s historic pier and work their way eastwards towards Appley to help rid the Island’s beautiful coastline of damaging plastics and rubbish.

Stuart James, Director of Marketing and Innovation at Wightlink, says: “The amount of plastics and other waste washing up along our beautiful coastline is staggering and we must do all we can to help turn this harmful tide. As well as looking unsightly it is causing real damage to our delicate marine eco-systems.”

Earlier in September, Wightlink launched its ambitious Green Agenda outlining its commitment to protecting the sea, land and air around us.

Nicola Craig, Wightlink’s Environmental Officer, says: “Our commitment to the environment runs deep with investment in the Solent’s greenest ferry and a pledge to reduce ship and vehicle emissions by five per cent by the end of 2020.

“We also provide electric vehicle charging points at our ports and inspect our quays and shores every day, removing any rubbish we find. We’re really proud to be taking part in this beach clean as part of our pledge to look after the environment, while at the same time celebrating all that is great and good about the Island on Isle of Wight Day.”

Wightlink has sponsored the event since its launch in 2016 and will be providing all those who take part in an Isle of Wight Day beach clean with a voucher for discounted ferry travel
