Bright ideas from Bembridge pupils help save energy

Bembridge CE Primary has been shining a light on energy-saving measures, thanks to the support of Wightlink’s Green Fund for Schools project.
The Isle of Wight primary successfully applied for £816 through the ferry company’s initiative to support school projects that help create a more sustainable environment for the Island.
The new Bembridge lights are low-energy with motion sensors, so they switch off when no one is around.
School business manager Sara Price says: “With energy prices rising so steeply it was a very timely project. It has also given us the perfect opportunity to speak to children about how we get our energy and how important it is to use it carefully.”
Bembridge is one of 15 Isle of Wight primaries which received a share of around £10,000 from Wightlink’s Green Fund for Schools. It was set up to support projects that bring lasting environmental benefit to schools and their communities and help Islanders to live in a more sustainable way.
The grant was handed over to pupils and teachers during a special school assembly by Wightlink’s Head of Port Operations Dean Murphy.
Dean says: “Once again it was great to visit an Island primary school and see how sustainability and looking after the planet are becoming such a big part of learning.”
