Beat Blue Monday with a little Isle of Wight magic

An Isle of Wight wellness expert has come up with some top tips to help people combat Blue Monday – the day that’s often considered to be the most depressing of the year because of financial struggles, bad weather, and failed New Year’s resolutions. In 2025, it falls on January 20.

Island ferry company Wightlink asked Jenny Stewart of Balance + Glo to share her recommendations on how to beat the blues.

  • Move for Joy

Does your current fitness regime make you happy? Why not try something new, like yoga, walks in nature or strength exercises?

  • Make social opportunities

During the darker months, it’s easy to feel isolated and lonely. Humans are social beings so aim to get together with others at least once or twice a week.

  • Eat more of the good stuff

Instead of restricting what you eat, try some different foods that make you feel uplifted and positive. Include more plant-based choices and cut back on the caffeine.

  • Create positive energy

Pull out your notebook and write down all the things you’re grateful for. It could just be the sun shining through the window, a refreshing cup of tea or your favourite comfy armchair.

  • Take a deep breath

We take around 17,000 breaths every 24 hours but how many times do you notice it? Simply taking 10 minutes a day to focus on your breathing can lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety and increase focus.

“Beating the winter blues is all about finding those little moments of magic to keep you feeling good, no matter the season,” says Jenny Stewart. “Move your body, nourish your mind and get outside – a walk by the coast or stroll in the woods can do wonders for your mood.”

Ferry captain Sam Mitchell recommends fresh sea air: “Gazing out across the Solent from one of Wightlink’s ships is actually one of my jobs and it’s a highlight of my day. A short break by the seaside can help chase the blues away.”

Wightlink is offering Blue Monday discounts of 30% on cross-Solent travel to or from the Isle of Wight for breaks of two nights or more with a car. Book between Monday 20 January and Friday 31 January for travel before Monday 31 March 2025.
