Inspirational Islanders: Jago Tasker, surfer

Jago, 12, moved to the Isle of Wight eight years ago and loves the opportunities it offers to pursue his passion for outdoor activities. Swimming, skateboarding, cricket, surfing – you name it, there’s an opportunity to get involved on the Island.

“One of the best bits about growing up on the Island is the range of activities and clubs available to children.

I’ve enjoyed learning to surf with iSurf School and developing further with Eddie’s Surf Academy. I continue to improve my skateboarding with the excellent John Cattle’s Skate Club and I am learning tricking (flips, kicks and twists) with WightTricks Academy. I also play for Cowes Cricket Club in the summer. There is always so much sport you can have a go at which I love.

I’m looking forward to the new outdoor concrete skatepark to be built by Freshwater Parish Council and also the new indoor skatepark by Canopy. I also compete with West Wight Swimming Club at County level.

While there’s always plenty going on, there’s also always a quiet place to find somewhere on the Island. Compton Farm is great at low tide for walking and for spending time with friends. It’s also a great spot if there are the right conditions for waves to surf on that day!

Freshwater Bay is another favourite place – it’s fun to explore the caves and rock pools and if you walk up to the cliffs you get great views. Occasionally there is a wave to surf too.”
